Did you know that the State of California has the most uninsured drivers in the nation? Many drivers cannot afford or are not willing to pay for the minimum of liability insurance that is required by law. If they do elect to pay the minimum liability required, it won’t be enough to cover someone else’s expenses after a car accident. So what can you do to make sure you are properly covered when you’re in a car accident?

First, it is important to note that the difference between uninsured and underinsured coverage. Uninsured coverage (UM) will protect you if the other person at fault does not have liability insurance. On the other hand, underinsured motorist coverage (UIM) will protect you if you are in a vehicle collision with someone who has liability insurance, but their coverage is too low to cover the cost of your damages. UIM will pay for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain you’ve experienced following a car crash. The goal is to have higher limits than the person at fault in an accident so that you have an underinsured claim.

UIM insurance is not required in the state of California, so it is important to purchase this when reviewing an auto insurance policy. Typically, it does not cost much more to add UIM to your policy or to increase your current UIM coverage. Even if you have health insurance, you should still consider UIM insurance. Many people have health insurance policies with high deductibles. Your health insurance will likely cover medical bills after a car accident, but your plan may not cover services such as chiropractic care. You’ll be on your own when it comes to damage to your car and making up financially for lost time at work, as well.
